For most motorcycles, the 48" × 40" works fine because the bike’s wheelbase usually fits within that length. Measure your bike from front wheel to rear wheel; if it’s longer than 48 inches, go for the larger square pallet.
Weight capacity matters too. A sturdy hardwood or plastic pallet can hold up to 2,000 lb, while a basic softwood pallet tops out around 1,500 lb. Most bikes weigh under 600 lb, even with accessories, so any standard pallet will be strong enough. Just avoid damaged pallets – broken boards or splinters can give way under load.
How to Secure Bikes on a Pallet
First, place the bike upright on the pallet with the front wheel pointing forward. Use a motorcycle stand or a couple of wooden blocks under the frame to keep it steady. Next, wrap the bike with stretch film or a protective blanket to guard against scratches.
Secure the bike with at least four tie‑down straps. Two straps should go over the front fork and the other two over the rear swingarm or rear axle. Tighten the straps just enough to stop movement, but not so tight they bend the suspension. For extra safety, add edge protectors where the straps touch the bike.
Finally, check the overall load. Make sure the total weight of bike, protective material, and straps stays under the pallet’s rated capacity. If you’re stacking more than one bike, place a sheet of plywood between them to spread the pressure evenly.
